How to Optimize RC Boats

Adjust the Propeller

There is a small propeller on the back of most RC boats, and this can be adjusted to change the way that the boat rides in the water. If the water is choppy and rough, adjust it so that the angle is decreased to keep the bow of the boat down, giving it more stability. On calm days, swing it the other direction so that the bow comes up. This reduces the drag and gives you more overall speed. It is always wise to look at the temperament of the lake or the river before you put your RC boats in the water so that you can make these adjustments.

The Center Trim Tab

Similarly, most boats have a center trim tab that can be adjusted. If you raise it, the boat will ride along at a higher altitude over the water. This gives you more speed, but it does decrease the maneuverability. If you adjust the tab down, you will have more control, but the boat will have a lower top speed. You can move this tab on your RC boats so that it works in conjunction with the propeller to give you the highest rate of speed, while still maintaining control.

Adjust the Strut

The propellers on your RC boats are connected to the hull by a piece that is known as the strut. This can be adjusted so that the motor is higher or lower in relation to the hull. This dictates how much of the propeller will actually be underwater when the boat is in motion. Watch the RC boats as they accelerate. Are they gaining speed smoothly, or are they sort of jumping or stuttering along? If they are not moving with smooth forward motion, lower the strut so that the propeller does not come out of the water.

Optimizing Your RC boats

The three tips above will allow you to make small changes to the way that your RC boats operate. To get the most out of them, make sure that you adjust all of these things each time that you use the boats, taking into account the water, the weather conditions, and things of this nature. You may think that you need to buy a new boat motor to get higher speeds or more control, but you can achieve both of these things for free.
